In 1992 Viagra carried out clinical studies of its new preparation called Sildenafil citrate. Initially, Sildenafil was studied for use in cardiovascular diseases: high blood pressure(hypertension) and angina pectoris(stenocardia). Researches believed that preparation would increase blood flow to heart tissue resulting in lowering high blood pressure. However, the preparation didn't satisfy expectations: Sildenafil citrate didn't act on hypertension and the blood circulation of the heart muscles. However, as it turned out Sildenafil showed another therapeutic effect. To the amazement of researches, many of the patients participated in the clinical trials, didn't wish to return the tablets. Later men confessed in significant improvement of erectile function after the application of this substance. Pfizer researches took advantage of their success invention. Next year Pfizer began clinical trials of Viagra that vividly demonstrated high efficacy and safety of the preparation.

More than 3000 of patients aged from 19 till 87 estimated the effects of Sildinafil citrate. The results showed that Viagra is effective for improving erection. Viagra is effective for healthy men as well as for those who suffer from diabetes, damages of the spinal cord and other diseases. Soon Sildenafil citrate was introduced on the pharmaceutical market under the trade name Viagra.

The word Viagra accrues from 2 words "Vigor" that means power, energy and "Niagara"(massive waterfall on the Niagara River). In 1996 Pfizer received patent for Viagra manufacturing. On march 27 ,1998 Viagra was approved by the Food and Drug Administration and became the first oral medication intended to treat erectile dysfunction in the USA. Soon Viagra became the most promoted and sold medication in the United States.

The name of Viagra has become so well known that many of aphrodisiacs now are called "herbal Viagra". Viagra is also known as "Magic blue pill" or "Vitamin V". In 2000 Viagra sales reached 1$ billion and accounted for 92 percent of the global pharmaceutical market for prescribed erectile dysfunction pills. However, in 2007 the global share of Viagra had plunged to nearly 50% because of different causes, including the entry on the market of Levitra (verdenafil), Cialis (Tadalafil) and a big number of viagra generics.
